Job Overview

Cignition, Inc., a leading virtual tutoring provider that utilizes a research-validated instructional model, is seeking dedicated virtual tutors to join our team. As a Cignition tutor, you will play a pivotal role in providing one-to-one and small group (up to 5:1) tutoring sessions, focusing on math and English Language Arts. Join our mission to build conceptual understanding, one engaged learner at a time.

Working directly with our experienced Program Management team, composed of former classroom educators and education experts, you will facilitate engaging and interactive tutoring sessions to foster student-to-student interaction.

Benefits and Pay Range

  • Starting pay: $25/hr
  • Part-time role with flexible hours (most tutors average ~10 hours per week, but there is no set minimum)
    • The more programs you complete the requirements for, the more tutoring sessions you are likely to be scheduled.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Conduct one-to-one and small group (up to 5:1) virtual tutoring sessions in math and English Language Arts.
  • Maintain professionalism and integrity in all interactions with students.
  • Utilize an inquiry-based approach to encourage meaningful student engagement.
  • Update availability regularly to ensure accurate scheduling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Our tutors average ten years of classroom experience, and we aim to maintain that level of quality.
  • Proficiency in virtual meeting tools such as Google Meet and Zoom.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Familiarity with research-based instructional practices (e.g., the Science of Reading).

Service Requirements

  • All tutor hires must complete physical (ink) fingerprinting for AT LEAST one program. Failure to do so will result in not being scheduled for sessions, and you will be terminated.

  • Support Operating Systems
    • MacOS X - 14 Sonoma or higher
    • Microsoft Windows 11
    • Chromebooks - must be eligible for the latest updates
  • Processor: Dual Core 2.4 GHz or higher - Intel i3/i5/i7 or AMD equivalent
  • Ram: 4GB or higher
  • Monitor: 1 or multiple
  • Web Camera: built-in 720p or higher
  • Speaker and Microphone: built-in or headphones
  • Web Browser: Google Chrome - Latest Version Available
  • Mobile Devices, iPads, and tablets are not acceptable

Internet Service Provider (ISP) - Bandwidth Requirements

  • Broadband/Fiber Minimum Speeds: 10mbps Upload and 5mbps Download

    • Delay (Latency): The time it takes for data to get from one point to another should be less than 150 milliseconds to avoid lag in audio or video.

    • Consistency (Jitter): The less variation in how quickly data arrives, the better. Aim for less than 40 milliseconds of jitter.

    • Reliability (Packet Loss) - Avg(Max): Ideally, no more than 2% of the data we send should get lost along the way.

Working directly with our experienced Program Management team, composed of former classroom educators and education experts, you will facilitate engaging, interactive tutoring sessions that foster student-to-student interaction and build deep conceptual understanding.

Cignition works with you to provide online tutoring sessions that match your schedule and tutoring interests. We provide tutors with instructional resources, and our unique system aggregates detailed topic and concept-level data collected through student activities. Each session begins with tutors receiving a rich student profile to better understand their needs.

Role Structure

  • Part-time role with flexible hours (average 10 hours per week, no set minimum/maximum)
  • 30-60 minute recurring session windows, 2-3 times per week
  • Tutors will work with the same students each week, as relationships are crucial to student learning
We are currently looking for candidates with regular availability between 12:00 pm and 7:00 pm Pacific Time / 3:00 pm and 10:00 pm Eastern Time. Cignition’s school district clients determine the tutoring schedules and provide student rosters.

  • Experience teaching/tutoring students -- our tutors average ten years of classroom experience
  • Familiarity with research-based instructional practices 
  • Must complete ink fingerprinting at a US location
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Access to a computer with a reliable internet connection
  • Proficiency in virtual meeting tools such as Google Meet and Zoom
  • A strong belief that all students can succeed

Pay and Bonus

  • Salary for this position is $25/hour

Service Requirements

All tutor hires must complete physical (ink) fingerprinting to tutor. Failure to do so within two weeks of completing your onboarding paperwork will result in termination.
